Does NUDE always have to be considered LEWD

The australian public are being bombarded with a lot of governent funded ads, many about something-nothing (ie just to make the unthinking actually think that the government is doing stuff, co-incidentally just before an election)... anyway last night it was the netalert campaign blitz, and the govenrment are providing free anti-porn filters for anyone to download. Is this, along with the security fence in sydney good use of tax payers money? Am I becoming too cynical?

Don't get me wrong, I do encourage the use of net filters and parental invovlment on internet usage, it is just I feel strongly that a piece of software is not a substitute for parental care. Parents please take an interest, share your time and experience with your kids (including the net savvy adolescent ones, whom these filters are unlikely to stop anyway).

The net alert site even has some good advice here.

more self filtering

Don't be discouraged ... deviant art has followed flickr and added self filtering for mature content ... I fully support this, it means that grown ups (like me can "publish" works without worrying about them being "accidentally" viewed by minors (those innocent children of mythical importance) ... yet i hate to be a spoil sport but the big problem of the moment on lots of on-line communities is that most of the pseudo pornographers, images trolls and generally annoying folk on the net are young adolescent people, and very immature at that ... probably in their bedroom while mum & dad think they are doing homework!

still I would rather not risk corrupt a purely innocent soul, so I applaud the self filter move.

blacked out photos... don't panic

some of you on flickr may have noticed the blacked out (tv noise style) image appearing a lot... don't panic it is not big brother gone wild... it is a new type of self filtering... that allows responsible folk to categories and classify their images so they wont be accidental exposed to minors, wowsers, grandmothers (or the easily offended)...


I for one think it is a good system and everyone should think about using it... If uou see a black screen and it is someone you know and trust.. click through... if you don't know them and they have a greybot buddy icon... don't bother

there is even an implication that art does exist on flickr... (may the NIPSA witch hunts for art, and artist works could be a thing of the past)
