A lot is written about the tonal approach to sketching and painting and it is probably what can give "photorealistic" images, but I think the impressionist contributed a lot when they worked out colour and light can give form. The only real problem is so many of us have forgotten how to see colour, Pastels, particulary on a coloured ground, are a wonderful way to help take note of those colours. I think they bring even quick sketches to life.
